Autobiographical issues i want to present in my artwork… Being visceral…

Researching Tracey Emins work has made me consider the themes in my own life that I want to explore….

  • My dreams of being a ballet dancer – crushed only by money…
  • My strained relationship with my parents after failing as a ballet dancer…
  • Being thrown out into the world alone at sixteen years of age…
  • Sex, drugs booze… to get a bed…
  • The wrong man… everything I knew being of no help to my situation…
  • Loosing the plot… becoming mentally ill… You what? I am now “disabled?”
  • Being sectioned… a prisoner… not knowing why or how?
  • My beautiful daughter… well it was now or never…
  • Troubled relationship… Loosing the plot…
  • The aftermath… no longer am I a mother…
  • Starting again… Becoming a woman in my own right… reawakening of being a sexual being… not just a mother…
  • the continuing daily struggle of all the above….

Turning Autobiography into art – Tracey Emin – Strangeland… chapter one…

Chapter one of Strangeland begins right back at the beginning of What are in child development the informative years where all our brain programming and personality traits are formed.

Key Ideas and themes in chapter one:-

  • Childhood environmental and emotional factors…
  • mother and father not in a conventional relationship…
  • being a twin and having shared the womb and a language as a baby that only they understood…
  • Feeling ” special” or different…
  • child development… discovering ones own body, and her brothers…
  • forming secret innocent relationships with adults… squatting…
  • becoming aware of sexuality of herself and others…
  • ill health… not feeling like a girl… and loosing teeth…
  • mother working so hard in low paid jobs… not being around much…
  • Trying to grow up too quickly… disco’s…being raped… at thirteen…

This chapter goes a long way to give a deeper personal insight into much brushed over issues in Emins life.  Work probably informed by these incidents is her embroidered tent, Everyone I have ever slept with.  The tent is an exploration into this intimate and trustful act of being defenceless and sleeping with some one.  Named are the rapist, her mother and father and her twin brother.  This sounds like a sexual statement on the surface but appears deeper than that when explored.

Analysis through practice…. Choose an artist to study who relates to your work as an artist….

As an artist I see myself as having life experiences to do with being female in 2012 and coming to conclusions about these experiences and representing them in a visual way for consideration by others.  Because of this I have chosen to study the work and process on making of Tracey Emin.  I connect with her work as it is raw and honest.

A starting point for my work will be reading her book Strangeland and reviewing it here chapter by chapter in an attempt to work out the process of turning autobiography into visual art.  In each chapter i will try to find the main themes and ideas and see if I can find specific examples of her work that directly relate to the autobiographical writing.

I will be making samples of emin inspired work in an attempt to understand the process.  This will progress to my own work which stems from my own life experiences.  I connect with a lot of Tracey Emins themes as a woman but have my own experience to express.
